Mon avis en anglais :
First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley and Troubador Publishing Ltd for the sending of this ebook.
This novel is an autobiography. We discover the author through his childhood in Wales, his move to Ireland, the mourning, the education, the country life, the illness of his wife and his fight for children’s rights. It’s a really interesting text because it deals with a rich period in History (the author was born in 1938 and therefore relates almost the entire 20th century), particularly the post-war life. And the privileged place of his life was Ireland, and with the Catholic / Protestant conflict, it’s really interesting to see the perspective of a Catholic.
The themes are many and varied, whether education, games, health, family relationships and daily life. He describes a country life, not really rich, and see now where he is, it’s really impressive !
Chapters are based on themes, for example, there is one on the different ways to spend summer at the time. But sometimes capters are chronologicals. It’s very confusing at first, but we made it. However, I admit that enumerative and descriptive passages are sometimes bored …
I liked to learn more about the school system, and I had a good laugh when I saw that they had a « House System » that works almost exactly like Hogwarts in Harry Potter.
Much of the book is about teaching. Willie McCarney was a teacher and he dedicated his life to the defense of students, to understand and help them. For him, the children’s right is paramount and it is exciting to see his fight every day for this.
There was also a whole passage about his wife, especially, his illness. For his wife, Bridget, was reached early, the disease can be similar to that suffered by Stephen Hawking (neuro-muscular degeneration I believe). We see their daily struggle and the feeling of abandonment of the patient. This is extremely moving.
But, despite all these good points, I did not much attached to the people of the book and I read many chapters diagonally. The reason? Willie McCarney did a lot of repetitions between chapters and it’s boring … It’s a shame because he has a really interesting life! Unfortunately, because of this writing, I have not thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’ll give him 12/20…
